Senate Greenlights Bill to Disclose Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team relented after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next goes to the president for his approval. He signaled on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the official management of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their supporters who were watching from a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he was concerned the measure would make public identifying details of people, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
