Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
