Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
