Colombian Leader Says 'I Will Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Invades.

President Trump along with Colombia's president have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing strains in their relations following American military units attacked Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates cocaine mills and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions coupled with Allegations

Speaking to the press over the weekend, the US president suggested analogous use of force towards the South American nation, claiming Colombia is “very sick too” and “run by a sick man who enjoys creating narcotics and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the business.

A Frayed Partnership

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the fight against narcotics trade and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened markedly since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members laid down arms following a landmark accord.

The President's Firm Answer

When asked whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, firmly denied the accusations. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I a narco," he stated.

"Trump speaks without information. Stop slandering me," he wrote online.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in drafting the nation's constitution in the early 90s and eventually served as a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning president.

"I pledged not to touch a gun ... but for Colombia I shall resume arms again," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the national leader's security detail had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have sided with Trump, however, leaders spanning the political spectrum have rejected the possibility of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Financial Pressure

Washington revoked his travel authorization following he encouraged US military personnel to refuse unlawful commands. In October, authorities imposed economic restrictions on Petro, the first lady and a number of key allies.

At the same time as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
